Whether youâre moving to a new city or down the block, moving can be one of the most stressful things to deal with in life. Because we donât move often (hopefully) it can often be a daunting and confusing experience. Most of us donât know how to shop for a mover, the terminology used in moving or what to expect when it comes to pricing.
Weâre here to clear up most of the mystery. So where to begin⦠Letâs talk about Local moving first.
When choosing a local mover, consider the following factors. How close are they? This can affect travel time costs and fuel surcharge costs. Reputation and reviews⦠look up your mover online, ask for references. Check licenses, most movers should have at least a registration number for the state they operate in. Youâre always better off with a licensed legal mover over the guy on craigslist that shows up with a rental truck and not enough pads or equipment. If you want the best idea of what youâre moving cost will be, ask them to do an in home survey, and request an order for service outlining their charges.
Most local movers have a hourly rate, but where to go from there? You should contact two to three movers in your local area. The normal charges you should expect to see are the hourly rate for a truck and two to three men, plus a charge for fuel or travel time. In addition, should you need packing or unpacking, there will be a charge for the labor cost involved plus the materials.
You may need 3 men should you have a particularly large move and want to get it done in a single day, or have circumstances such as a long carry from the home to the truck. It would also be recommended to utilize extra help if you should have unusually heavy or bulky items. A third man can also be beneficial if you live in an apartment or condo with an elevator or stairs involved.
Think about your new home layout and start thinking about where you'll place the furniture. Create a floor plan of your new home that will prevent the stress of making decisions when your furniture arrives at your new home. If your new home or apartment is much smaller, make certain you have a backup plan such as a nearby mini storage facility.
So thereâs not much more than that to local moving, I would suggest that you prepare for your move by having everything packed the day before the move. Have plenty of water available for you and your movers.
And if your movers do a good job for you, reward the driver and helper with a tip that you feel is fair.
Happy moving and best of luck on your new home.
